Student-musicians attend Hofstra Honor Band Day

Westhampton Beach High School students Brett Geller, hornist, and Ava Kuklis, clarinetist, recently attended the second annual Hofstra Honor Band Day at Hofstra University. They were among 84 students representing 36 school districts on Long Island who had the opportunity to rehearse and perform with the Hofstra Symphonic Band and its director, David Soto. Additionally, they attended instrument-specific master classes and participated in a Q&A session with the Hofstra band members and Hofstra admissions. The day concluded with a performance for family and friends.

Top Boys Golfers

The Westhampton Beach School District congratulates junior Owen Jessop and sophomore Zach Berger, who were named to Newsday’s Top 20 Long Island Boys Golfers list. Owen was recognized for winning the individual county title last October when he parred the No. 1 playoff hole for a 147 at Spring Lake Golf Course. Zach earned honors for shooting rounds of 75 and 74 in the county championship to finish fourth at 149 last fall. He tied for 24th at the state championship last June with a 14-over-par 158.

Westhampton Beach student named semifinalist in Presidential Scholars competition

Westhampton Beach High School senior Meghan Kelly has been named as one of 625 semifinalists to advance to the final round of the prestigious U.S. Presidential Scholars competition. She earned her spot for her impressive academic achievements and leadership abilities.

Kelly is her school’s Class of 2024 valedictorian, a member of the National, Math and Science honor societies, a Commended Student in the 2024 National Merit Scholarship Program and an AP Scholar with Distinction. She also received a perfect score on her AP Research exam and is a semifinalist in the Junior Sciences and Humanities Symposium.

When not studying, Kelly is an active member of her school’s varsity track team, pep band, Spanish Club and Interact Club. She is also a volunteer member of the Westhampton Junior Ambulance.

She plans to study biochemistry at Duke University in the fall.

Westhampton Beach athlete takes first in steeplechase, sets new school record

Westhampton Beach High School’s star runner Trevor Hayes took first place in the boys 2,000-meter steeplechase competition at the New York Relays meet at Icahn Stadium with a time 6:02.3 — a new Westhampton Beach High School record.

This is not Hayes’ first impressive run. He previously earned an All-American title following his performance at the Nike nationals. To acquire the title, Hayes took fifth place out of a field of 48 runners in the 2,000-meter steeplechase.

Hayes started running in eighth grade after earning an All-County award in tennis as a seventh grader. Since committing to running, Hayes has received multiple All-County, All-League and All-State recognitions in all three seasons of competitive running – cross-country and indoor and outdoor track. He also qualified for the Nike National Outdoor Championships in 2021, 2022 and 2023 in both the steeplechase and one-mile run.

As for academics, Hayes has earned a prestigious 2023 Heisman High School Scholarship award as part of the annual Heisman High School Scholarship competition. He is an honors student and a member of his school’s National Honor Society, for which he serves in the role of parliamentarian. He is also an Eagle Scout.

Hayes intends to study mechanical engineering in college.

Spending time together

Westhampton Beach High School students recently visited the district’s elementary school to spend time with kindergarten, first and second grade students. During the sessions, the high school students read books related to diversity and inclusivity and involved the students in hands-on activities related to the theme.
