During the month of May, Westhampton Beach Elementary School fifth graders participated in several engaging science, technology, engineering and math challenges as part of their science education.

Challenges included using recyclable items such as water bottles and straws to design the fastest car and creating an airplane out of tissue paper, tinfoil and cardstock. Students were also tasked with making a life jacket that would stay afloat for 90 seconds using different materials, including bubble wrap and rubber bands. In addition, they forged catapults with the goal of designing a contraption that could hit a target three feet away.
