For the third year in a row, Westhampton Beach Middle School students brought home impressive awards from the New York State YMCA Youth and Government Conference, which brings together young leaders from across the region to simulate the legislative process and engage in civic discourse.
Working diligently over the past several months with the help of their dedicated teacher, Kelly Massaro, the 71 students prepared seven original bills to present at the conference. Of those bills, two of them were recognized with Best Bill awards. Those bills focused on the right to read and child influencers.
In addition to their legislative achievements, several students earned individual accolades. Matthew Palamidessi and Evan Pereyra were honored with Best Debater awards, demonstrating their exceptional oratory skills and persuasive arguments. Michael Kessler received the Overall Delegate award, recognizing his outstanding contributions to the conference, and Pereyra secured the coveted position of Next Year’s Conference Governor, a testament to his leadership abilities and potential to inspire future generations of young leaders.
“I am incredibly proud of the hard work and dedication of my students,” said Massaro. “Their accomplishments at the Youth and Government Conference are a testament to their commitment to public service and their potential to make a positive impact on their communities.”
